The world of science fiction has long been a porthole. Hamilton, Gwyneth Jones, Ian McDonald and Brian Stableford, along with the hot Australian writer Greg Egan represented by two stories , contribute nearly half the volume. Maybe it was just me, but a lot of the stories seemed so skewed towards fantasy that I felt kind of slighted. Another good story in this collection. I wonder, does science fiction age with time? I don't remember the story, maybe because I'm not really sure what it is about. The Very Pulse of the Machine - Michael Swanwick.

Landis - clearly inspired by the siege of Sarajevo, this is a nightmarish vision of a future ethnic war in Europe; once flourishing city of Salzburg in Austria is besieged by the hords of New Orthodoxy, fanatic zealots belonging to a very radical branch of orthodox church; I must say I didn't like it much as I found it boring. Supplementing the stories are the editor's insightful summation of the year's events and a lengthy list of honorable mentions, making this book a valuable resource in addition to serving as the single best place in the universe to find stories that stir the imagination and the heart. I liked it a lot. Mcauley - again, slow, drawn out. The world of science fiction has long been a porthole. Landis' Winter War, is an ethnic-cleansing war in Europe through the eyes of a Japanese girl Includes bibliographical references. The only story in the collection which I consider rather weak.

There will never be another editor like him. A tourist from a wealthy orbital city goes on a high risk safari in the torrid jungles of what was once United States. This vision of future is really creepy and depressing, but the story itself is very good. Dozois's anthology continues to be the leader in a field which has, admittedly, little competition, currently only going head to head with David Hartwell's three volume series. Another story that could either be science fiction or fantasy. I had submitted a story that Gardner accepted, as had a handful of other writers. The world of science fiction has long been a porthole.

The returning war party brings amongst the captives an Englishman, who was previously captured and enslaved by Tuscarora - he is the first white man the Cherokee ever saw. A good, although sad and depressing story. Story three - Charles a Korean War Vet, takes up a natural life. Le Guin for celebrity sparkle, but he didn't overlook relative newcomers either. His huge fantasy anthology The Book of Magic — with brand new stories by George R. I had high hopes for one that was sort of like a detective story, but even that one petered out after a promising beginning. Is this why they did not shine? What mysteries belie the truths we once held to be self evident? Abstract: Twenty-eight stories feature in this 15th annual collection.

There were some good stories, but if your going to read one of Dozois' compilations, I'd start with a different one than this 1997 version. I love this story - Due to overpopulation, children are not allowed to grow up. Of particular interest is the large number of non-American writers. I must add that for a 1997 story it's a pretty prophetic one. Its an odd story, asking what is real, what is unreal. As in previous years the general mood of many of them is rather grim and depressing but this time there are also some cheerful merry stories included and this is a very welcome thing.

But beyond that, there are some truly great stories, particularly by the all-too-infrequently collected women writers, that make the collection worthwhile. I will give the story 3 stars; the novel is better. On deeper inspection, it examines the role and interpretation of art across cultural boundaries. Interesting story about exploration and learning about oneself. Also like 10 16 to 1 by James Patrick Kelley and a time funnel story about a big money recreational program to see real Dinos in the past gone terribly wrong by a man's son getting eaten by a T Rex.
